’52 Dr. Alfred Randall, Jr., 93, of Dothan, died May 6, 2018. A native of Birmingham, Dr. Randall graduated from Vincent High School in Shelby County before attending Auburn. He was a firm believer in education and always wanted to keep learning. Dr. Randall was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He practiced veterinary medicine in Childersburg for many years prior to his retirement in 1971. After he closed his clinic, he established a railroad and salvage business which he operated for several years. He was a private pilot, an avid hunter, woodworker, metal worker and beekeeper. Survivors include three daughters, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and extended family.
’59 Dr. Robert “Bob” Sylvester, 82, of Monticello, Fla., died May 12, 2018. He attended Mississippi State University prior to transferring to Auburn. He served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force. Upon his discharge, Dr. Sylvester started his veterinary practice in Bastrop, La., specializing in large and small animals. In 1969, he relocated his family to Brooksville, Fla., where he continued in practice for 17 years. After retiring from private practice and moving to Tallahassee, he worked with Florida’s Department of Agriculture while continuing to increase his goat farming operation on his farm in Lloyd. He is survived by his wife, Quay, three children, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and extended family.
’64 Dr. Calvin Perry Smith, 79, of Clewiston, Fla., died June 23, 2018. Dr. Smith attended the University of Florida and Auburn University, where he received the DVM degree. Following graduation, he was drafted by the U.S. Army, serving as a veterinarian at the rank of Captain. Upon his discharge, he moved to Miami, Fla., where he practiced veterinary medicine for more than 40 years. As owner of Trail Animal Clinic, Inc. in Miami, he became active in both the local and state veterinary associations, serving as president and treasurer of the South Florida Veterinary Foundation and president of the Florida Veterinary Medical Association. He was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award and two Dedicated Service Awards by the SFVMA for his numerous contributions to the association and community. In 2007, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Veterinary Medical Association, the most prestigious award that can be given to any veterinarian in Florida. In retirement, Dr. Smith owned and managed P.A. Smith Ranch Property, LLC, a 2,500-acre working cattle ranch in Hendry County. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Adele, one son, and four grandchildren.
’86 Dr. Judy Marie Morley, 56, of Sanders, Ky., died Dec. 11, 2017. Dr. Morley worked as a veterinarian with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for more than 35 years. She was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of St. Joseph Parish in Warsaw, Ky. Survivors include her husband, Greg, one daughter, two sons, and a grandson.
